When backpacking, one major concern is bringing all the essential gear while also keeping your pack light. On my last long-term trip through South America, I knew I would be doing a lot of hiking, and wanted a good pair of trekking shoes without having to carry extra weight. That’s why when I found a pair of hiking shoes that also doubled as everyday sneakers, I knew I had to try them out.

Their Claim

Vasque claims:

  • The Stealth® Rubber used to make their Scree Low Waterproof Hiking Shoes is the “best sticky rubber there is”
  • Their Arc Tempo Last creates an athletic fit to promote quickness and agility over rough terrain
  • An EVA-lution midsole and dual-density EVA footbed provide cushioning during your descent
  • An UltraDry Waterproofing System, which features a waterproof breathable lining and a waterproof nubuck upper to keep your feet completely dry

Our Finding

For the most part, these shoes were everything I was looking for. I hiked through Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Bolivia, Peru and Ecuador without even the smallest blister. They were extremely comfortable, even though I have wide feet and usually have to go to very particular stores to find shoes that don’t pinch. Additionally, when I hiked the Inca Trail and it poured, I was the only person with dry feet. During the 3-months of regular hiking, there was only one hike that I slipped on, and that was because it had just rained that morning and was extremely muddy. Other than that, I traversed over rocks, mountains, mud and roots, went up and down steep hills and even went canyoning and rafting in them without a problem.

The only negative I found with these hiking shoes was the lack of ankle support. This only bothered me a handful of times, but I know some hikers this may be a deal-breaker. Because I was wanting to use them as everyday sightseeing shoes, however, I wanted the low cut. That being said, Vasque offers a range of shoe styles, some which offer ankle support. Judging by the quality of the Scree Low’s, I think it’s safe to say the other styles will do what they say.

The Bottom Line

Vasque Scree Low Waterproof Hiking Shoes are perfect for the backpacker who wants quality hiking shoes without having to carry an extra pair of boots. You can purchase them at select REI locations, or online at Bizrate. You can also click here to find a store near you that carries them. While I reviewed a women’s pair of shoes, all styles come in men’s sizes, as well.
